A friend of mine had her first daughter two years ago, and I may have gone slightly overboard with a custom-sewn baby quilt, matching doll quilt, stuffed animal dog, seven customized onesies, and matching reusable gift bags.

So when she announced last year that she was pregnant with her second daughter, I knew that I needed to live up to my previous expectations. For baby #2 I sewed a baby quilt, a matching double-sided doll quilt, a stuffed animal elephant, matching reusable gift bags, and fleece hats for Mom, big sister, and baby. Needless to say I get a little bit excited when someone that I’m close to announces that they are going to be expanding their family.

I decided to wait awhile to post so that there was no chance that she’d get a sneak peak but I’m really happy with how the quilt turned out so I wanted to share!

To make the quilt top I used 36 – 6.5″ x 4.5″ pieces of purple speckled cotton fabric and 36 – 10.5″ x 4.5″ pieces of a variety of different cotton fabrics sewed a piece of purple fabric to a colorful piece. I tried my best to not have any of the same fabrics too close to one another, but it’s kind of like putting together a puzzle. The back was a 56″ piece of flannel that I cut and added fabric to not only for the design element of it but also to make it wide enough to fully cover the back of the quilt.
